9-Year Old Banned From Library Contest For Winning; Learns About Liberalism

Liberalism has no shame, no shame at all. The latest victim? 9-year Tyler Weaver. What happened to the little guy? After working hard all summer to win a reading contest sponsored by his local public library, he is rewarded by being banned from subsequent summer reading contests! Amazing, isn’t it?
According to the librarian who made this idiotic decision, Tyler “hogs” the contest. So, instead of actually having the contest be about merit and who actually does the work of reading the most age-appropriate books (Tyler hit 63 this summer, by the way), in the future the “winner” will be determined by a random drawing! So, the contest is now turning into, as we used to say in elementary school, a booby prize.
Tyler has won this contest five years in a row. But why should that have any bearing or influence on changing the rules? According to his mother, Kate, Tyler has read 373 books during the past five years. Furthermore, this is something he really enjoys doing and has been dedicating his summers to this since he was five years old.
Obviously, Tyler is also competitive. He likes to win and enjoys being in this contest. You would think that Tyler would be good for the library’s image. Why not make a big publicity stunt around him winning the contest and pump up the value of all the hard work and dedication that he needed to use in order to achieve this? Certainly the message would be out there for others that hard work and dedication do pay off, and maybe inspire the next champion to have a go at the contest in earnest.
Nope, the crotchety old librarian has decided to take it upon herself to destroy the contest. Marie Gandron actually told Glen Falls, NY local Post-Star newspaper that Tyler “hogs” the contest and should voluntarily “step aside.” She continues with, “other kids quit because they can’t keep up.” So, in true liberal style, the librarian has determined that since she can’t get the other kids to keep up, she must pull Tyler down…and create the “winner” by drawing names out of a hat.
I guess the goal of the contest was not so much to create readers but rather had a political message or undertow. Gandron actually seems to think that this is not really a contest, but it is more akin to a club, and certainly feels like everyone should get a chance. Of course, this forgets the fact that everyone does indeed have a chance. And lest you think that the contest can be fixed, the children are required to answer a question about the books when they are returned to the library.
Sadly, I think this type of attitude is becoming all too common these days. This is certainly how liberals think today. The Democratic party would certainly support the librarian’s thought process on this, even if they might be just a little too smart to take a public stance on such an issue. But it does spell a disturbing trend in our country and culture. We used to be a country full of rugged individuals. After all, it was our ancestors who tamed a wild continent. It was not easy moving westward and having to overcome countless obstacles. Now, we seem to have gone from that down to needing to rig a kids reading contest to preserve the feelings of those children who are too lazy to try to actually compete.
I hope that Tyler learns a true life lesson from this. If there is something you want, go out and get it. Oh, and don’t let the scrooge librarians out there get you down! Tyler, in my book, you are a true American! |
