There are lots of theories as to why the rate of violence has declined. there are compelling reasons to think the decrease of lead in the environment is a factor. Increasing standard of living is a biggie, though. The rate of violence globally has been steadily decreasing since the 13th century.

But these crimes have always been there. They just have been buried in the greater problem. I remember one case a couple of decades ago when a 14 year old killed another kid because he wanted to know what it was like to kill someone. I guess he was a Johnny Cash fan...

And then there was Kitty Genovese. Lots of examples of this sort of thing, it is just a matter of them getting national attention. Again, this is why anecdotal evidence must be handled carefully. I am willing to bet that if a study was done it would show that these kinds of murders are pretty constant per unit population. Not all sociopaths make it to Wall Street you know...
