NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release Vivid Technologies Receives Major Order
From Terminal One At JFK International Airport

WOBURN, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 4, 1997--

First 100% Screening Installation In United States Chooses Vivid

Technologies for Automated Explosives Detection Equipment

Vivid Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ:VVID) today announced that it has received an order of approximately $1.7 million for its automated
explosives detection systems for installation at JFK International Airport's new Terminal One. This installation will make Terminal One the
first terminal in the United States to automatically inspect 100% of passenger baggage for explosives. This order also represents the first time
an entity in the United States, other than the FAA, has purchased automated explosives detection equipment for an aviation application.

The order for 13 systems from Terminal One Group Association L.P. (TOGA) includes machines for automatic inspection of checked baggage,
oversized baggage and carry-on baggage. The systems are scheduled to be shipped starting in January 1998, in time for the new terminal
opening in early summer 1998.

Terminal One is being built by a consortium of international airlines comprised of Air France, Japan Airlines, Korean Air and Lufthansa to
accommodate their traffic and that of other airlines. The screening method chosen by TOGA and its member airlines for checked baggage is
based on the multi-level baggage inspection process pioneered by Vivid in the United Kingdom and subsequently adopted throughout
Europe and Asia.

''As part of a total security system, this approach responds to the TOGA carriers specific security requirements and meets the FAA
regulations,'' said Alain Content, TOGA Chief Property Officer. ''It is an efficient and effective method to perform 100% baggage screening
without affecting the flow of our passengers and customers.''

''Terminal One is another important milestone for Vivid,'' said Stephen Reber, president of Vivid Technologies. ''This installation at JFK will
demonstrate that automated 100% screening for explosives is viable at major U.S. airports.

''Terminal One will also be the first location for installation of our new Model APS carry-on baggage inspection system in an aviation
application,'' Reber added, ''and we are excited to have such a high profile site to launch this product.'' The APS is the first carry-on baggage
X-ray system that automatically inspects each bag for explosives and contraband in addition to weapons. It will screen all passenger carry-on
baggage at Terminal One.

TOGA's decision to purchase Vivid systems was made after a thorough evaluation of all available technologies. In addition, Terminal One
utilized data from evaluations of similar automated explosives detection systems performed around the world that prove Vivid's checked
baggage systems outperform the competition.

Vivid Technologies Inc. is the leading developer, manufacturer and marketer of automated explosives detection systems that detect plastic
and other explosives in airline baggage. Approximately 220 Vivid explosives detection systems have been sold for use as primary and
secondary airport baggage inspection systems worldwide.

Vivid's systems have been selected for use in 33 airports in 13 countries including London's Heathrow and Gatwick Airports, Brussels in
Belgium, Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport, Zurich in Switzerland, Amsterdam Schiphol, Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Malaysia, Chek
Lap Kok Airport in Hong Kong, New York's JFK International Airport and several additional U.S. airports.
