Here is some CS news today:Business/Technology Editors

ROCHESTER, N.H.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 8, 1997--Cabletron Systems (NYSE:CS) today announced a new product branding strategy, taking another significant step towards solidifying its leadership position in the enterprise networking market. The new strategy unifies Cabletron's premium, award-winning enterprise switching products under a single brand family, called the SmartSwitch.

In addition, Cabletron also announced it has shipped its one-millionth SmartSwitch port. The company reached this milestone just nine months after shipping its first SmartSwitch lines, the 2000 and 6000 series.

"By consolidating Cabletron's premium switching and remote access products under a single banner, we leverage the rapid acceptance of the SmartSwitch solution and unify a product set that is based on the same core architecture, yet was marketed under multiple product names," said Stephan A. Gray, Cabletron's senior vice president of worldwide marketing. "The new strategy also allows us to unify products that have come to the company through various acquisitions."

Today's announcement reflects the first phase of a strategy focused on Cabletron-branded products. Through Cabletron's recent partnership with Digital and acquisition of its Network Products Business, the line of Digital-branded products will continue to be offered through the already established Digital distribution channels.

Under the new naming convention, Cabletron's MMAC-Plus and SmartCell products, as well as other selected product offerings, will be recast under the SmartSwitch brand. The MMAC-Plus for example, will be renamed the SmartSwitch 9000. Another example includes the SmartSwitch 250, an ATM workgroup switch which was previously called the ZX-250 SmartCell switch and entered Cabletron's product family through the acquisition of Zeitnet.

The renaming of these products is based on a numeric series which identifies the market segment toward which a product solution is targeted:

-- SmartSwitch 9000 for the Data Center

-- SmartSwitch 6000 for the Wiring Closet

-- SmartSwitch 2000 for the Workgroup

-- SmartSwitch 1000 for the Remote Office

"The new strategy maximizes our marketing efforts, by putting more wood behind fewer arrowheads," said Gray. "Our brand investments can be more concentrated, creating greater awareness and preference for the SmartSwitch line. Now, when we market a product like the SmartSwitch 6000, we will also be building value for all of the other products in the line."
