The problem with the Middle East is that it was where we faced offed with the Soviets during the Cold War. It took a while, but eventually most of the countries went with us as we were willing to prop them up and ignore the human rights abuses. We kept on propping the same ones up after the decline of the Soviets because the Oil Must Flow. It also helped secure Israel from its many enemies.

Saddam probably would have gone with an Arab Spring uprising. And would have turned out little different with the exception of our dead and wounded and the trillions we flushed.

Undoubtedly those countries that don't evolve will follow a similar path until they can sort things out. That might take redrawing borders, resettlement and who knows what else. But it does mean a lot of people are going to die there by violent means.

In addition, the ME is just not going to be high on our list any more. Israel can defend themselves, although it would probably be wise for them to take a lower profile. With greater than unity fusion happening right now along with tracking, energy isn't the concern like it was. Don't get me wrong, turmoil in the ME can and will affect prices, but it won't cause the world to grind to a halt. So our disengagement from the ME is inevitable.

How things resolve there is an open question. The reality is, though, we have little or no influence on the outcome. The best we can do is offer recognition to who ever gains control at the moment for stability reasons. But we also have to not get tightly identified with anyone. Because they can be gone in a flash.
