I suspect he had been cautioned against talking about legal matters on the jail phone, yet he was concerned about having the money to pay the lawyers because his future depended on that.

And, as you know, this was not pertinent at all to his guilt or innocence.

You really need to get over it. Z was determined to be innocent by a jury of his peers, and it just kills you. All agreed there was just no evidence on which to convict him.

And that's how the system works. Why can't you move on?
