I think there are more altruists out there than you might think.

My comment was specific to Rat's solution to a failing public school in New Orleans. He said as a parent of a child in such a school--he would tutor the child and volunteer at the school.

In response I suggested that wasn't a practical solution for most parents who were living below the poverty line (to get a voucher to transfer out of the school one's parental income had to be that) as they neither had the expertise (educational background) nor time (if the were one of the working poor) to do that.

Wharf is universalizing his own situation as a solution--which I feel is inapplicable to this problem--failing public schools in poorer neighborhoods.

What, if any, is your own experience with the parents of students who receive free lunches? .
