I really don't think this is a ridiculous concept. Not that dogs are "the solution", but anything that unites rather than divides would seem to be useful. Wherever people can find common ground, that seems like a good thing to me. And dogs, animals, pets, whatever, are a place where people do find common ground. Of course, that's coming from someone who has had two or three dogs around continuously over the last 40 or so years.

My daughter lives in an apartment complex that has some kind of water running through the middle of it, which has steep embankments on either side. She saw a cat drowning in it, and went in after it. Unfortunately, the sides were too steep for her to get out on her own so she was in a bind. Before the ordeal was over there were a dozen strangers involved in rescuing both her and the cat. Black, white, Hispanic, whatever -- no one really cared.
