Below is why I am really interested in PHM. People on coumadin need to go get their levels checked 2-3 times per week when starting coumadin. Thereafter, they need to get it checked once every 2 weeks. They have to drive to a coumadin clinic to get their levels checked. Very inconvenient.

The only problem with this is that there are new anti-coagulants on the market where you don't need to get your levels checked (i.e. Pradaxa). I strongly believe that coumadin is a much safer medication than pradaxa with regards to trauma since Pradaxa is not reversible whereas coumadin is.

Just my thoughts.

David.

Cardiology Market Opportunity

Over 4 million patients in the US undergo Coumadin® therapy for chronic conditions, making the patient self testing market (PST) market a potential a $6.5 billion opportunity. The market is in its infancy currently, as Medicare just recently approved payment for in home PST. It is expected to be a muilti-billion dollar market annually as it matures.

With more than 95% of this market unserved, a handful of companies are competing to enroll patients into PST programs. These companies must provide both the in home testing equipment and the continued service of monitoring patient PT/INR results and transmitting them to the physician. This creates a high barrier to entry as alignment with a device manufacturer and sufficient purchasing capital is required to provide patients with devices and ongoing service.
