One additional little piece of data is that while I was in grad school at Stanford, the Standford Daily published an article which showed a slightly negative correlation between admitted freshman SAT scores and GPA while at Stanford.

What I'd like to see are some comprehensive studies which look at individuals later in life, including happiness metrics, and compare that to early school performance. In particular I'd like to see how the top 5% of HS GPA's do later in life, and what impact early age graduation from HS has on later life. It would not surprise me if one or both of those are negatively correlated to later life success.
