Where is the contraction? Yes, they were plutocrats. But they didn't think that people like themselves were the only ones to legislate. Just the opposite in fact. Their ideal American was someone with a family farm, not plantation owners.

In the American Enlightenment, which shaped their ideas, monied interests were viewed as one of the sources of corruption and had no place in government. And history has proven them right, monied interests have a corrupting influence on government. You really don't know much about them, do you?

Here is a fun fact. In general most of them were opposed to taxes. But, if they were needed the general viewpoint was to tax the rich first...
