It goes to the lines that men are born (meaning mankind) with certain inalienable rights (life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness). They weren't just talking about themselves. The ideas are derived from both French (Rousseau) and English (Hobbs & Locke) political theorists, and from the ideas born in the protestant reformation which essentially challenged the concept of the 'divine right" of Kings.

It may be our merchant/planter authors of these documents were merely hoping to shut the Brits out of a share of their trading, but in doing so they really bought into the rights of man arguments.

So it is these "rights" that conceived our nation of people free to pursue those inalienable rights that we feel belong to all human kind, and that we assert make us who we are as a nation, and share with all human kind, that leads us to the debate on intervention--not that we don't have out own agendas either. As I said--a messy process.
