I've been telling you.............Seattle schools are getting the money and focus that suburban schools normally get. A conscious decision was made to elevate scholastic standings of the city. Seattle is in the fortunate position of having the money to make that difference. Back when white flight hit American cities, Seattle was able to stop the outflow of its middle class after two decades so it did not go down economically as deeply as other American cities did. During the 90s the firms headquartered here took a stand to try and save the city. They invested heavily in the downtown area and brought it back to life. Efforts were made to help some of the neighborhoods that were struggling.....spending money to improve streets and infrastructure. The housing projects were torn out and replaced by mixed income developments. The first lite rail line was not run through the wealthiest neighborhood but the poorest. Commercial areas along the lite rail right of way were given seed money to upgrade. Development around stations has been encouraged by reducing taxes and easing zoning height restrictions.

In the same manner the city went about improving the school district. Some of the worse schools got the best equipment. Advanced Placement classes were put into the worst schools which encouraged whites to voluntarily integrate those schools. The oldest schools are getting completely upgraded.One of the mothball schools acts as a temporary location for the kids while their school gets renovated. It hasn't been easy and there are still a lot of problems but its working as you can see by the test scores.
