Two very significant problems with welfare are:

1) It entraps the current recipients

2) It entraps subsequent generations as well.

I agree with you that I would love to spare the kids of the current recipients. But keeping their parents on welfare is likely the single most destructive thing. Kids learn from their parents. Their parents learn from others on welfare. The welfare providers learn from their clients and everyone helps each other stay on the dole.

You should hang out in trailer parks and get to know some of them.

I don't want to see people starving, especially kids, so I have no problem with assistance, and I have no problem with some of that assistance coming from my pocket. I just would like to make sure that the money coming from my pocket is not in fact doing damage, which is what most of welfare does. Lack of food and lack of shelter are terrible things, and so is destroying the will to go out and fight for a living. Welfare does the latter to millions of people, under the guise of addressing the former problems. Unintended consequences...

So change welfare into something that provides the needed basics of life, while also keeping the individuals firmly engaged in the process of earning their own living.
