I assume you wouldn't want to argue that the level and distribution of jobs has less to do with poverty than the number of single parent families.

All I'm assuming is that the level and distribution of jobs available to single parents is not better than the level and distribution of jobs available to others. That is all you need to know in order to arrive at the conclusion that being a single parent is causally linked to poverty. In order for it not to be causally linked to poverty, the level and distribution of jobs available to single parents would need to be substantially superior to the level and distribution in the general economy. There is absolutely no evidence for the latter, and plenty of evidence that it goes the other way.
