Right now we have too many kids........mostly young black and brown males.....dropping out of school by the time they get to the tenth grade. That perpetuates the poverty cycle...........and the violence and the gangs

I don't think it is anything new. Poverty was always rampant anywhere large groups of recent European immigrants settled in third world living conditions of our congested northern cities a century ago. What some of us continue to stress is the breakdown of the family and welfare state the past 40 years make the odds of success and moving up much, much lower these days. The hope to me is technology might help narrow the divide, plus the long lasting imprint of the age of Obama on young people of color

The poverty cycle has entrapped blacks since slavery ended. Immigrant groups have come, settled in and moved up even as blacks remain entrapped. The history of blacks in this country is not the history of German or Italian or Irish immigrants. The fault doesn't lie with the welfare state or the break down of the family..........the abject poverty existed well before there was welfare. Blacks were entrapped in poverty and kept there by the apartheid that ruled this country for over a century.
