J,
You may want to restart the system first, just in case things have gotten scrambled. After it comes back up, it's:
Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, ScanDisk.
ScanDisk is the newer version of an old tool called Chkdsk (Checkdisk). It fixes common errors on hard drives and removable media. These errors can pop up when you have to shut down the computer without exiting Windows first, or if the power goes down, for instance. Under these conditions, you can incur "Lost Allocation Units" and/or cross-linked files (two or more files that no longer have any idea of what part of your hard drive they're supposed to be occupying). If you run into these problems, you may well have some files that are already damaged; Scandisk will give it's best guess and assign a beginning and ending to all files involved.
I don't know for sure that it will fix you're email problem; you may have to see if Netscape has an Inbox repair tool for that, but Scandisk is generally a good place to start and should be run on a regular basis. You can run it in a report-only mode, so if it starts coming up with lots of ugly errors, you can save the report and call for a Real Geek to come out and help you.
