For most locations, wind power still requires a subsidy to compete with electric power from other sources. But if one counts the long term pollution costs from conventional fossil fuel sources for electric power, then wind power is probably competitive in a much larger setting.

There also have been improvements in maintenance procedures for cutting costs. All turbines have bearings that eventually wear out. Monitoring the health of each unit, making repairs when needed instead of at predetermined intervals can save a lot of money and reduce long term operating costs.
