It seems to me that, if the House votes against authorizing American use of military force in Syria, republicans will pay a terrible political price. The administration, and the mainstream media, will attempt to connect them with every future use of chemical/biological weapons in the Middle East. They will claim that, had Barack Obama been allowed by congress (i.e., the House) to use force against the Assad regime, it would have sent an undeniable message to others in the area who were considering the use of such weapons. But because the republicans stood in the way of sending that strong message, the continued/increased use of those WMDs lies entirely on their shoulders.

Of course there isn’t an ounce of truth to that assertion. Of course republicans in the House should vote their consciences (which hopefully would preclude our intervention) rather than making political considerations their first priority. But that doesn’t change the cold, hard facts … or the fact that the low information voter would no doubt be taken in by the above propaganda, as it morphs into a drumbeat of headline news on into the foreseeable future.

This administration does nothing without considering the political ramifications. This president may even want the authorization to be voted down for precisely these reasons. Who knows? It’s difficult to clearly interpret the vagaries of an ego-centric narcissist … especially when he purports to represent the best interests of a nation he loathes.
