I thing affirmative action or excuses for bad behavior because your are____ do little to empower people or make this country a better place long term.

This is a very broad statement and suggests that you believe what happens in the past doesn't effect us in the present or the future. I disagree. We are all effected by the past and what was experienced by our ancestors. In fact, scientists believe that addictions and dysfunction can be passed down from one generation to the next. Furthermore there is racism/prejudice protected by law and there is de facto racism/prejudice. The US has gotten better with regards to the former but de factor racism/prejudice still very much exists. That's why women still don't get equal pay with men for the same job and same level of experience, why gays still get openly harassed and harmed and why blacks are frequently the last hired and the first fired. Its why inner schools have worn out walls and floors, crappy or non existent equipment, broken windows and leaky roofs. Its why inner city neighborhoods don't get the same level of service as more affluent neighborhoods.

You lump in affirmative action with bad behavior as if they are the same. They are not! So long as de facto prejudice continues to exist this country needs affirmative action. And no one, including myself, is making excuses for bad behavior. So why bring it up at all?
