There is absolutely no chance of Russia going up against the US. Although it wouldn't surprise me if Simply thought that was in the cards. No, what happened was a situation that seemed absolutely hopeless now has a good chance of working out.

What I want to know is, was this planned? Or did Kerry make a slip like some claim and the gods decided to intervene?

If planned, this was probably the most stunning diplomatic move in history. Look what it achieved. Russia now owns the cause of taking Syria's chemical weapons from them. For us to have done that would require invasion and occupation. Now, it is all on Russia. And it is public enough that Russia cannot drag their feet. More importantly, it suggests a framework to deal with chemical weapon use in the future. Not to mention that now there is foreign intervention, things will be winding down in Syria. The status quo has been changed.
