Did the ban on aerosols have a direct effect?
Well one direct effect that I know about was perhaps a billion or so in R&D costs to remove a trivial amount of CFC from asthma inhalers, and an ongoing several billion a year in additional costs to the healthcare system because the new CFC-free inhalers are branded instead of generic. In terms of idiot regulatory decisions (it was an FDA decision in compliance with an international treaty) that has to be the clear winner for least-cost-effective regulation ever.

I agree with Tom and you that this is a complex system, with CO2 varying fairly considerably (on multiple time scales) without the aid of any human intervention. But at this point the added greenhouse impact of additional CO2 is widely accepted by climate scientists (except for a few politically-motivated folks) and it is pretty clear that adding more CO2 to the system will, in the long term, increase CO2 levels further. Add to that the possibility of large methane releases if you get permafrost melting, and you have the possibility of a runaway positive feedback loop.

I personally believe the fracking industry should be yelling about this from the rooftops - US CO2 emissions are at decades low right now because of fracking.
