Ferriero, the former chairman of the Bergen County Democratic Organization, was indicted today by a federal grand jury for allegedly running a racketeering scheme in which he paid lucrative kickbacks to a public official, solicited more than a million dollars in illegal payments and extorted companies wanting to do business in Bergen County. The 74-page indictment marks another major setback for a political figure who for years was known as a forceful, statewide Democratic powerbroker and kingmaker.
