Local Police Chief Agrees Zimmerman's a Sandy Hook "Waiting to Happen"

1

ThinkProgress has published a series of emails in which Lake Mary Police Chief Steve Bracknell, who oversees cops in George Zimmerman's Florida town, appears to agree with a concerned citizen who worries that Zimmerman is "a Sandy Hook, Aurora waiting to happen."

You can read the email chain in full below. It begins with a message from a man named Santiago Rodriguez, who wrote to Chief Bracknell in order to express his concern that George Zimmerman wasn't arrested following a domestic dispute earlier this week. Amongst other things, Rodriguez writes that Zimmerman's potential for violence could lead to another shooting tragedy like those that befell Sandy Hook Elementary School and a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado.

Chief Bracknell responded to Rodriguez the same day. After running down the details of the domestic incident—Bracknell says Zimmerman did punch is father-in-law in the face and smash his estranged wife's iPad over his knee—Bracknell writes, "Your reference to Sandy Hook.....................I agree." He ends the message: "On a personal note I agree with a few of your points."

Bracknell confirmed to ThinkProgress that the email is authentic, but he's now walked back some of his statements, saying that he did not agree Zimmerman had the potential to be a mass shooter and that he was "referring to the fact that [Zimmerman] seems to be involved in incidents" with guns.
