Nokia launches digital multi-band set-up boxes

ERIC LAI
Nokia Multimedia Network Terminals division last week prepared to launch a range of television set-top boxes which can receive digital satellite, cable and terrestrial broadcasts.

The Finnish telecommunications company calls them Multimedia Network Terminals, because they not only let you receive television broadcasts (in both PAL and NTSC formats), but also surf the Internet.

Its upcoming 9500 model will let users download data at 19.2 kbps with built-in Web browser software, division president Heikki Koskinen says.

The division, started by Nokia in January last year, opened an office in Hong Kong last week. It already has sold 1.5 million set-top boxes to Deutsche Telekom, Germany's largest telecommunications company.

Last month, Nokia opened a research and development facility in Beijing on wireless and wire-line technologies.
