The 5C does not open any new markets for Apple, it just expands its offerings in the expensive category"

Agreed. For better or worse, Apple has chosen to stay in their established markets where they have historically dominated. The 5S is a strong competitor in its price segment (especially in subsidized markets), but then again, the $99 iPhone 5 that it substitutes for would have been just as strong (if not stronger).

What it does do is give Apple 2 models to advertise. Marketing is a real strength for Apple, so we will see whether that drives higher combined sales.
