In any case, the two companies aren't in the same market. If they were, then there would presumably be some small advantage to either paying employees more or paying them less.

Well SAMs and Costco are truly in the same market. And Costco seems to think that paying their employees more works, and I suspect the results show that.

There have been studies that productivity increases with higher pay, all else being equal. The employee has higher self esteem, is less likely to switch jobs so retention/experience is better, and frankly the employees are more appreciative and just try harder.

And... we're really not talking about what's good for the company, but what's good for society. I suppose it would be good for the company to pay these folks $1 an hour, but for our society not so much.
