CO2 emissions aren't pollution in the normal sense of the term. They would only be harmful if they are causing or will cause massive climate change, or if they are highly concentrated and people or animals are exposed to them before they have time to disperse.

As for "doing the right thing" your begging the question. The dispute is about what the right thing is.
