Future niche for the general fibre channel marketplace:

I saw Network Appliance (Nasdaq: NTAP) present at the Alex Brown Tech Conference in October. The company makes network attached 'file servers' for ISP's (AOL, Earthlink, Netcom) and internet commerce companies like Amazon.com.
Their 'filers' provide the ability to access and cache large amounts of data. The filers currently use ethernet to the network and SCSI to the discs.

In the Oct presentation NTAP stated that their 'Next Generation file servers' will use gigabit ethernet to the network, and fibre channel for connection to the discs. According to the CFO, these Next Generation products will be available within the next few months.

Moral of the story:
IF Electronic Commerce takes off like the gurus predict, this could end up being a BIG niche for fibre channel.
