Joy Covey in the 2013 Memorials Photo Gallery Enlarged Photo PORTOLA VALLEY, Calif. (AP) - A tech executive who helped take Amazon.com public as the Internet retailer's chief financial officer has died when her bicycle collided with a van in Northern California.

The California Highway Patrol confirmed Thursday that 50-year-old Joy Covey of Woodside died Wednesday's after the van turned in front of her in rural San Mateo County. She was 50.

Covey joined Amazon in 1996, serving as its CFO, then chief strategy officer, in the early days of Internet retailing. The company went public on May 14, 1997, with an initial public offering price of $18. Shares closed yesterday at a record $312.06.

After leaving Amazon in 2000, Covey became an independent investor and consultant and focused on environmental causes. She established the Beagle Foundation and worked with the Natural Resources Defense Council.
