it probably makes sense to recognize muslim holidays in Dearborn MI.

When enough of the population is any given religion that a significant portion of the students aren't going to show up for school, you recognize the holiday.

In the area that I live, jewish holidays are recognized in the public schools. In a couple of the areas you could almost skip christmas and easter due to the ratio of jews to christians.

If we started giving days off for every religion, kids would have to start going to school year round to make up for lost days.

If we start giving days off from school for islam, then where do we draw the line? What about Hindus and Buddhist and Wiccans and B'hai and Hari Krishnas?

Pretty soon the muslims are going to be demanding that traffic signs are in arabic.
