I didn't mean to split any hairs. I'm not really disagreeing, I'm just trying to understand.
"Duty" is a word for Priests, Governments, and other USERS. "Duties" implies an imposed obeisance to authority without the choice to abstain. The reason that I have no "Duties" is simply because I SAY SO. Every thing I do, I do out of self interest. Sometimes that allows some ass to claim I did my "DUTY"
OK. I see that you have issues with the connotations of 'duty' in the ways that could remove the aspect of personal choice.
I would not think to do this myself. I think that I have an obligation to pay my mortgage, but I can always choose not to. I understand the consequence that my house will be foreclosed on if I don't maintain the payments. I might say I have a duty to my father and mother, but I can still walk away from that as well.
I don't have a moral obligation to pay my mortgage. I can accept succor from my parents through my life and then abandon them if I choose. There is no sin in the first; just a financial consequence. If I make promises and then break them, that is my choice, I should just accept the consequences.
In my nomenclature, if I keep my promises, I have done my "duty" to the other party. My choice was never removed. No big thing here.
