>That even former VPs of corporations aren't guaranteed anything in retirement. Nothing is guaranteed in life. You have to be responsible for your own well-being, and neither corporations nor government is ever going to fulfill that. Even if you vote Democrat your entire life.

That's entirely ideological. Not caring about whether or not certain solutions work doesn't mean they can't. Except for a couple of generations, government, corporations, and labor worked together and really did give hundreds of millions of people very nice, secure lives. Granted, the corporations were dragged into it kicking and screaming, but it worked. The pension system worked very well for a long time. Social Security has done well for people. It cut the poverty rate among the elderly by like 80 percent.

Additionally, do you know how many VP slots there are at corporations these days? This guy, despite the fact that he was an international traveler, probably made in the low six figures for a few years, and then became an independent contractor. The stock market crash took a ton away from him right at the time he should've been able to retire. We ain't talking Blankfein or Buffett here.

But Jesus, his story sounds like a horror story. Doesn't sound that way to you? Did you read the whole thing?
