White outs are definitely scary. I recall the time before four wheel drive vehicles (at least in my experience in the early 80s) when I needed to cross the Sierras in a white out condition. Hwy 50 was being held at Echo summit. So I took my lady friend now 28 years of marriage later on a circuitous drive South of Tahoe over Luther pass into Hope Valley towards the higher Carson pass. We were hoping for visibility as we crept along from snow stake to snow stake for about 10 miles. It was blinding and very lightly traveled. I was pretty stupid back then.
