It's true that wind power is now competitive, at least in certain regions. In New England, where substantial amounts of power are provided by oil fired generating facilities, given the price of oil these days, wind power can hold its own. In addition, wind power facilities qualify for federal tax incentives, and incentives in some states as well. The future keeps looking better.

My own view is that both wind power and solar are especially useful in creating decentralized facilities. There are huge security risks that stem from centralized facilities with capacity upwards of 1000 MW. Locating wind and solar power facilities almost by definition leads to decentralized facilities that can help both in times of war and when a major power failure sends a central facility off line.
