The thirty-two metronomes are started at arbitrary times, each one out of sync with the others. After fewer than four minutes, they are all in sync with each other.

BUT the underlying reason for their eventual synchronicity is the fact that the platform upon which they are sitting is not entirely stationary. It is moveable, and therefore affected by the vibrations of the 'strongest' (most powerful) metronomes, in turn affecting the other ones.

Consider the metronomes to be the population of America. And consider the platform to be the U.S. Constitution. If the Constitution remains grounded and firm, the metronomes will retain their own identity (their own rhythm) indefinitely. If it begins to move (become more flexible), all of the metronomes eventually tick in 'lock step'.
