>We can't even trust the federal government to balance its own budget or guarantee the long-term fiscal viability of SS and Medicare.

SS is long term viable. Medicare is getting better. The budget is getting closer to balanced every year now. But the party with which you affiliate are the ones trying to keep those things from happening.

>We've seen how corporations can screw up their own pension funds. It's not even guaranteed that said corporations will exist in their current form when the workers retire.

And we do have the PBCC for that, and just a couple of rules would fix much of the rest.

>There's no individual accountability. Meanwhile, "externalities" are going to happen outside of anyone's control, including that of government and corporations.

Plenty of them are CREATED by corporations. But a larger body has much more of an ability to deal with externalities than a individual person.

>Everything you believe in is predicated on the notion that people can't be trusted to make their own good decisions.

Actually, that is a big part of it. But that's realism and backed up by centuries of evidence. Additionally, there often are no good decisions available to individuals, or a decision that seems like a good idea at the time turns out not to be good.
