You are correct in one sense. Intel occasionally continues to order older piecs of equipment from some suppliers that they (the suppliers) consider outdated/obsolete.

But Intel requires them to fabricate this older generation equipment so that Intel can keep fab processes and equipment identical from one fab to the next (for the equivalent fab process).

I heard this places the suppliers in an awkward position. But, If that's what Intel wants, that's what they will get.

I don't know exactly which pieces of gear and/or what vendors fall into this category.
