AXENT TECHNOLOGIES INC (AXNT) 18 7/8 +13/16. The general opinion is that Axent is paying too much for firewall software developer Raptor Systems (RAPT 14 11/16 +11/16), which would explain the the noticeable decline AXNT shares suffered earlier this month after announcing that it would pay $250 million for Raptor. At the time the deal was announced, AXENT shares traded at the $20.625 level. Although the stock is down only 8.5% from its pre-announcement level, Merrill Lynch analyst Christopher Shilakes feels that the stock is oversold. Noting that AXNT shares have fallen as much as 20% from the day of the deal announcement, the Merrill Lynch analyst raised his near-term investment rating to "buy" from "accumulate," while maintaining a long-term "buy." According to Mr. Shilakes, AXNT has a proven history of making prudent acquisitions and effectively integrating those companies in an expeditious manner. Given this past success, the analyst thinks that investors should simply be patient and wait for the positive effects of the acquisition to hit the bottom-line. For those willing to bet that the Raptor acquisition will turn out to be another smart deal, Mr. Shilakes suggests a 30%+ performance of the shares over the next twelve months, with another 20%+ gain to come in the following six months.
