The huge rise in the price of gold in the 1970s was due not just to monetary inflation but to a feeling that the United States had lost control of its monetary and fiscal discipline. The Vietnam war had ended in defeat (though there are still many Americans who refuse to see it that way, and think that it was just a poorly-conducted war instead of a huge mistake).

From what I read now, there is beginning to be agreement that George W. Bush's Iraq war was a complete mistake, and there may very soon be a recognition that the U. S. government is bankrupt.

Conditions now are so much worse than in 1975, that even if Paul Volcker (or rather, someone of similar resolve and intelligence) were put back in control, the situation is past remedy.
