In a certain respect you are correct. Google at present has considerably more real power now than Microsoft or Apple. They control much of the Internet through their control of what is likely the majority of Internet advertising dollars. Trust me, if Google told the New York Times to change content or lose their advertisers, the New York Times would change the content. That's power.
