I think people shouldn't consider themselves above the law. I certainly don't and think it is amusing when others don't respect property or law and get jailed. Claiming protest is no excuse for breaking the law. It stands to reason that they tempted fate and didn't get the desired affect. I suspect they would not be in jail now if there wasn't damage or suspension of operations etc.
