MCI IMPLEMENTS INDUSTRY-LEADING BANDWIDTH USING NORTEL
(NORTHERN TELECOM) FIBER OPTICS
LOS ANGELES, Dec. 8 /CNW/ - MCI today became the world's
first service provider to turn up live customer traffic on an
OC-192 network span using eight wavelengths to deliver 80 Gbps
capacity on a single fiber. The application utilizes Nortel's
(Northern Telecom's) 10 Gbps S/DMS TransportNode OC-192 systems
with Multi-Wavelength Optical Repeater (MOR) Systems for
Dense-Wavelength Division Multiplexing, enabling capacity of 80
Gbps -- the maximum in-service capacity currently available
from a single network element.
"MCI has consistently set the benchmark for high-capacity
transport network innovation in live commercial applications,"
said John Gerdelman, president networkMCI Services. "Being able
to deliver this magnitude of capacity on our network clearly
demonstrates MCI's ability to meet the future data, multimedia
and voice communications needs of our customers."
The live commercial route comprises a 170 mile stretch of
MCI's network linking Los Angeles and Rialto, California. MCI
is one of the world's largest long-distance carriers with
28,000 fiber miles throughout the United States.
"We are pleased to congratulate MCI on implementing our
combined OC-192 and eight wavelength Dense-WDM bandwidth
solution in their network," said Ian Craig, president,
Broadband Networks, Nortel. "Our award-winning OC-192 can
actually support up to 16 wavelengths, allowing our customers
to easily grow their network capacity to up to 160 Gbps."
MCI, headquartered in Washington, D.C., is one of the
world's largest and fastest-growing diversified communications
companies, with annual revenues of $18 billion.
Nortel had 1996 revenues of $US 12.8 billion and has
approximately 70,000 employees worldwide.
