Dell Computer to Revise
Ad Claims on Its PC Sales
By a WALL STREET JOURNAL Staff Reporter

ROUND ROCK, Texas -- Dell Computer Corp. plans to change TV ads claiming it's the top seller of desktop personal computers to U.S. businesses after an independent research company revised sales figures on which Dell based the ads.

International Data Corp. said Monday that Compaq Computer Corp. actually sold more desktop PCs than Dell to medium-sized and large-sized U.S. businesses in the second quarter. IDC had placed Dell first when it originally reported the data in September.

Dell launched TV advertising late this summer touting the size of its corporate business. Initially, the ads ended with the tagline that Dell was "one of the largest sellers of corporate computers." They were recently changed to say "No. 1 in corporate desktops."

A Dell spokesman said it's "not a major issue to change back, and we'll do that, absent some other legitimate substantiation for the claim."

Following the IDC's initial report, executives at Compaq, the top-selling PC maker since 1994, claimed the research company wrongly assigned some of its sales. After looking into the complaint, IDC adjusted sales estimates for Houston-based Compaq going back 18 months, said Christine Arrington, analyst in its San Francisco office.
