Take a look at Exabytes Mammoth which is pretty comparable to the AIT and has clearly not set the world on fire and does have an excellent line of libraries available.
Maybe what it comes down to is that when you get to the leading edge mid-range technology, DLT's higher speed (I believe 5 vs three MB/sec UNCOMPRESSED) and higher reliability due to linear vs helical scan are two crucial factors when it comes to backing up larger more important databases. You might want to check DLT 4000 for something more comparable to AIT. Perhaps you are comparing AIT's compressed figures with DLT's native figures.
