I think you're projecting. Chicago's an awesome city and I've had good times in Detroit and wouldn't mind going back.
Chicago is an OK city to visit, but the politics there are completely screwed up. Every time you hear about corruption or scandal there, the excuse is, "Oh that's just Chicago."

As for Detroit, there is plenty of real estate there for real cheap. I suggest you buy a house or two there.

Neither of those two cities are being held up as "shining examples of liberalism." Even your friends in real life would laugh in your face if you tried.
