If you take from the young, to give to the elderly, that's a wealth transfer. As a block the elderly have massive resources compared to the young, so it just doesn't make sense to me. It does make sense that we should support the elderly who are poor, and make sure they aren't homeless or hungry, as we should with any of the poor, but to send a check to someone like Buffet, or my husband? Ridiculous. And when you look at healthy young people, paying as much as they will be, of course they are subsidizing the unhealthy older generation- and the few unhealthy young people. And they're being forced to do it. It's probably the right thing to do, but it's definitely a wealth transfer, and imo it weakens your case to argue it's not, as it seems to me it puts you at odds with reality. I'm not against the whole "force everyone to pay more so sick people can get insurance"- what I'm against is MORE social security for all seniors, because so many of them don't really need more. Give social security to the folks who are truly insecure, and let the ones who are secure do without.
