The University of Notre Dame’s Core Council kicks off its “StaND Against Hate Week” today. Planned events are designed to increase awareness and support for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning (LGBTQ) community on campus.
According to The Observer, events include a “How to Be an Ally” dinner, bringing together panelists from the Gender Relations Center and student allies. On Tuesday, the film “Bully” will be screened on campus, followed by a prayer service at the campus’ Grotto.
“We chose to do a prayer service because we’ve talked for a long time about how there’s disconnect between the LGBTQ community and spirituality and faith life,” sophomore Council member Maggie Waickman told The Observer. “I think there’s a specific struggle that many members of the community go through in regards to faith, and there’s no real good outlet [currently].”
On Thursday, performers will be singing as part of an Acousticafe. Friday will be a “Day of Silence,” where people wear stickers or have a card that states that they are not speaking for the day as a way of honoring those who feel they have to hide their identity.
“StaND Against Hate Week expresses a sentiment the entire Notre Dame family can get behind,” said Waickman.
Obama will go after schools like Clemson who would never have transgender week, but has military apprieciation week, Ronald Reagan week and yes even John Wayne week |
