If anyone believes that what has been said about Obama (or even Bush before him) is extreme, they should listen to the first 30 minutes or so of this lecture on the Civil War. Southerners had some pretty harsh things to say about Lincoln (as would be expected), but just as harsh about Jeff Davis--this is a 2011 lecture at Vanderbilt University about the politics of the south by an historian of the period:
youtube.com

If you start at around 12:30 or so, you will get 3 minutes on the Confederate Constitution, and will see some startling similarities between the things that were written into that document and what teapers want to do today. Start at about 19:00 or 20:00 for comments on political parties in the Confederacy, and about 23:00 for comments on Davis. To give two examples: the person who served as his first Secr of State said that Davis was a "stupid ignorant wretch" and his own brother said that the confederacy might need a "Brutus" to recover from the mess Davis had made.

However, one irony that he points out is that the Confederate govt did a lot of things that were in contradiction to the states rights platform that it was founded to support (listen to the lecture for a few minutes from about 31:00 or 32:00).

It might be instructive for high school students to listen to some of this to put today's events into a broader historical context.
