Cretinism has been abandoned as a clinical term in modern times due to the more common pejorative application of the word Cretin. In any event, Hypothyroidism is associated with many symptoms that do not necessarily translate to Cretinism. The terms should not be considered synonymous. The acceptable term used by the medical profession these days for the condition formally known as cretinism is 'Congenital Hypothyroidism,' caused by an untreated congenital deficiency of thyroid hormones.

The term Cretin in modern times is commonly reserved for use to identify a stupid, vulgar, or insensitive person: clod, lout. (See Merriam-Webster).

Additional Information: Hypothyroidism is caused by the abnormally low production of hormones. The two most important are thyroxine and triiodothyronine. There are numerous adverse effects of this condition which can onset at any age. Extreme Hypothyroidism in infancy is the circumstance which can result in congenital hypothyroidism.
